Wig 101

What kind of wigs do you create?

U-Part Wigs: The U-part wig is designed to give the look of a sew-in with less tension on your hair. A front section of your hair in the crown area is exposed. Your "leave out" can be as wide or as narrow as you like. If the "leave out" is wide, more of your natural hair will be exposed. If the "leave out" is narrow, less of your natural hair is exposed. Some of your edges are left out as well. A U-Part Wig can be secured with wig combs or sewn down. Adding wig combs are optional. A U-Part Wig does not require a closure.

Lace Closure Wigs: (requires 1 closure, & 2-3+ bundles depending on head size and length of bundles) Lace Closure Wigs are the best introduction for first-time wig wearers. These wigs are constructed using a 4x4 or 5x5 lace closure. The parting space can be done in any direction within the lace closure. Using a larger closure allows for more versatility in styles. These are very common and great to have! Installing this wig takes all of 15 seconds to put on and adjust. Our lace closure units are constructed using a sewing machine and are made on a ventilated cap. Our ventilated cap comes with adjustable wig straps to adjust the fitting of your wig. Does not require glue and can be removed nightly. When purchasing a Lace Closure Wig construction includes the wig being made, bleaching the knots, tinting the lace to match your complexion, customizing the hairline, and styling the wig.

Lace Frontal Wigs: (requires 1 frontal, & 2-3 bundles depending on head size and length of bundles) Lace Frontal Wigs are for medium to advanced wig wearers. These wigs are constructed using a 13x4 or 13x6 lace frontal. The parting can be done in any direction within the lace frontal. The lace extends from ear to ear to gives a real scalp illusion. This larger lace allows for many different styling options. When purchasing a Lace Frontal Wig construction includes the wig being made, bleaching the knots, tinting the lace to match your complexion, customizing the hairline, and styling the wig. Does not require glue and this wig can be removed nightly.

How long will the wig last? Our wigs are made with sewing machines to increase the longevity of the product. Our secure tight stitch construction reinforces the hair wefts and prevents unraveling. It is imperative that you maintain the integrity of the wig.  Excessive styling, heat, washing, combing, and improper care may decrease the lifespan of your wig. The longevity of your wig relies on how you store, care, and handle the wig. Please be gentle and careful with your wig. The better you store, clean, and handle the wig-the longer relationship you and your wig will have. All Raw Hair Exchange wigs are machine-made and constructed with the highest quality of integrity. Give your wig T.L.C. and it will take care of you! At most your lace will need to be replaced ever so often. The replacement of the lace time frame will depend on how you care for your wig and how often you wear it.

Removing the Lace on a Wig

The lace material can be cut once your wig has been fitted and installed correctly. If you don't know how to remove the lace, please seek professional assistance from a local stylist.

I have a larger size head. Can you make a Wig for me? We create wigs up to 25” in circumference. Please contact us prior to order to review your wig options.

Are you sending in your own hair for a wig to be made (Bring Your Own Bundles)? No problem! Bring Your Own Bundles! Send in your choice of extensions you already own to have a unit constructed. We prefer working with hair bundles that have not been cut at the wefts and tracks. A customer's hair bundles will be inspected upon receiving hair prior to the wig being constructed to inspect the quality and decency. If the quality of the hair is not up to par, customers will be required to provide new hair. The hair that you send in must be clean, washed, and free of debris. You may also purchase hair from Raw Hair Exchange for your wig.

What is the difference between a Lace Closure and a Frontal? A lace closure in sizes of 4x4 or 5x5 etc. means in terms of inches the perimeter size of the lace. The same with a lace frontal in sizes of 13x4, referring to the size of the lace. A frontal covers ear to ear. When picking a Lace Closure or Lace Frontal consider how much parting space would you like on your wig and how much lace would you like to maintain.

Can you cut my lace? Is it extra? At no additional cost, I can precut the lace on closure wigs only, not frontal wigs.

What is the difference between a Custom Wig and a Premade Wig? Custom wigs are specifically made for each customer. Custom wigs are made with custom measurements just for you and only you. It is not a one size fits all wig. Premade wigs come as Small, Medium, or Large.

How often should I wash my wig? I recommend washing your unit once every 2 weeks or whenever when you feel that it is weighed down with product.

How should I store my units when they aren’t being worn? We suggest storing your wigs using mannequin heads made from Styrofoam or canvas cork material. Your units can be placed on the heads to preserve your style and keep it looking nice.

What’s the proper way to wear my hair under my units? To achieve the best results of your wig install a FLAT, neat braided foundation is needed. The smaller your braids are, the flatter and smoother the surface of your head will be. This will allow your wig to fit correctly. Not bumpy and lumpy! Straight back braids are recommended for closure wigs and frontal wigs.
